The Certification Board of Infection Control & Epidemiology, Inc. (CBIC®) is an autonomous multidisciplinary board that oversees the certification process for professionals in infection control and applied epidemiology. CBIC operates independently of other infection control-related organizations or associations.

Infection prevention professionals can exhibit their mastery of knowledge by passing a comprehensive examination devised by the Certification Board of Infection Control & Epidemiology (CBIC). Certified infection prevention professionals are entitled to use the initials CIC® after their names and in their titles.

Initial certification remains valid for five years, after which successful completion of recertification exams extends certification at five-year intervals.

The CIC® examination is conducted via computer five days a week at over 140 assessment centers in North America. No pre-scheduled testing dates are available. Once eligibility is confirmed, candidates will receive examination scheduling instructions from the testing agency. Upon certification, the credential remains valid for a five-year period.

The CBIC exam assesses candidates based on eight core competencies:
